Congress to Consider Family Leave This Week in COVID Relief Package
The HEROES ACT (H.R. 6800, The Health and Economic Recovery Omnibus Emergency Solutions) was introduced by the 116th Congress on May 21, 2020. The current iteration of the bill is awaiting a vote in the Senate, which is back in session July 20th through August 7th. July 31st is the last day The House of Representatives is scheduled in session, leaving only 15 working days for negotiations.
The HEROES ACT covers something all families care about: Paid Family Leave.
The COVID Crisis is bubbling this issue to the surface. Fortune recently reported that “Working families across the country are speaking out about the specific challenges they face, exposing a common and disturbing theme: a lack of access to paid leave.” One mom who spoke to the Paid Leave for the U.S. Action Fund (PL+US Action) talked about potentially being “forced to choose between employment and childcare.”
Take Action Today
Tell your senators: Pass the HEROES Act to provide paid leave to all families. Fill out this form where Paid Leave US (PL+US) invites you to “join us in demanding the Senate prioritize working families’ need for paid leave and paid sick days in the HEROES Act.”
Additional Paid Leave Advocacy Opportunities
The Women's Bureau in the Department of Labor is inviting families, employers, and others to submit comments on their experience with paid family leave - or lack thereof - to help advance federal policy. Though there are many questions included in the request for information, respondents need not address each question being raised. Responses should be provided by September 14th, 2020.
